Meet at the Fairmount Water Works, 640 Water Works Drive, Philadelphia, PA, 19130
When it was completed in 1822, the Fairmount Water Works, was not only the first municipal water system in the United States, is was also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Philadelphia, known far-and-wide for it's beautiful Greek revival architecture and sylvan setting. However, when it was closed in 1909, the building first found use as an aquarium, then public swimming pool, gradually decaying and finally closing in 1972. For years the Water Works sat empty, until recently when the building was fully restored and reopened as the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center.
Join us for a day of community service as we work with the Philadelphia Water Department on clean-up and environmental awareness projects at and around the Water Works, including initiating a planting project to be implemented in the spring.
