Table Talk
Democracy's Edge
Monday, January 23, 6pm
with Frances Moore Lappé,
In her newest book, Democracy’s Edge (Jossey-Bass, Fall 2005), Lappé argues that to save the democracy we thought we had, we must take it where it has never been. America is at the edge, struggling with multiple crises and a citizenry worried that we’re headed in the wrong direction. But these crises are mere symptoms of an underlying mistrust of democracy itself. She describes an emergent “living democracy” embracing economic and social as well as political life. A founder of two national organizations focused on food and the roots of democracy, and the author and co-author of fifteen books including Diet for a Small Planet, Lappé created the American News Service (1995-2000), which placed solutions-oriented news stories in over 300 newspapers nationwide.
