African-American Heritage Tour

"Art as a Cultural Record"

Meet at the Philadelphia Doll Museum (2253 N. Broad St.), an educational and cultural resource institution dedicated to preserving the art of doll making and collecting They will give us a guided tour of their collection of over 300 black dolls. The Museum provides a resource library of information and documentation which highlights the story of how black people have been perceived throughout world history. The collection includes African, European, and American Folk Art dolls, the renowned Roberta Bell Doll Collection, and American and internationally manufactured dolls.

Following the tour, we will return to the White Dog for lunch and a performance of
“Doin’ Dunbar,” with Oni Lasana.
This musical journey features the dialect poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906), a forerunner to the Harlem Renaissance Era and inspiration to Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Frederick Douglass and many others.

Tour Reservations

$25 includes lunch, tax & gratuity, entertainment and admission to the Doll Museum. Reservations required. Meet at the Doll Museum (2253 N. Broad St.) for the tour. Directions

From the White Dog and points West:
Head East on Chestnut Street
Make a Left on 16th and go one block
Make a right onto Market and follow the road 3/4ths of the way around City Hall
Turn right (out of the circle) and head North on Broad St
Continue to 2253 N Broad (on the right hand site. Look for the Green Awning that says "Philadelphia Doll Museum.)
Park on Broad St (Metered Parking)

From New Jersey (via Ben Franklin Bridge):
Take the Ben Franklin Bridge from NJ. Stay on the right hand side as you come to the end of the bridge.
Immediately at the foot of the bridge, you will make a hard right on to 5th St.
Go a few blocks and make a left on to Callowhill (first Major intersection)
Follow Callowhill 9 blocks to Broad. (Next MAJOR intersection)
Turn Right onto Broad St
Follow Broad to 2253 N. Broad St. (on the right hand site. Look for the Green Awning that says "Philadelphia Doll Museum.)
Park on Broad St. (Metered Parking)
