The Quagmire in Colombia:
Addressing the Drug War Habit

RESCHEDULED:
Monday, April 30, 6pm

with Ken Sharpe.

The vast majority of cocaine coming into the United States is produced in Colombia, and Washington is dramatically escalating the drug war there to eliminate peasant coca production. Drawing on his recent article in World Policy Journal ("Drugs, Guerrillas, and Colombia’s New Violencia"), Sharpe will explain why Washington’s military escalation in Colombia will only intensify the violence of the current civil war, make a negotiated settlement of the insurgency more difficult, and have no impact whatsoever on the supply of drugs entering the US. Sharpe is a political science professor at Swarthmore College and co-author of Drug War Politics, The Price of Denial.
