Keeping Philadelphians Healthy:
Issues and Challenges

Monday, March 13, 6pm

with Dr. Joanne Godley, the city's former Acting Health Commissioner

Facing issues of increasing childhood obesity, access to decent medical care for residents who have no insurance, and readying the city for a possible terrorist attack or pandemic flu, Godley had a daunting job. Her ideas include starting a city-wide Olympic-style competition and launching a major HIV/AIDS educational campaign targeting high-risk African American women. She has worked at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, investigating disease outbreaks in Puerto Rico and Philadelphia, and oversaw Peace Corps doctors and nurses caring for volunteers in 12 African countries. A medical doctor with a master’s degree in public health, Godley is completing a second master’s in bioethics in international research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
