Dr. Bill and Judy Thomas, founders of The Eden Alternative movement and The Green House Project, are advocates of a radically different system of caring for our elders. In a PBS interview, Dr. Thomas refers to the American nursing home as a left-over vestige of a factory, assembly-line approach to care. He suggests that The Eden Alternative demonstrates how companion animals, the opportunity to give meaningful care to other living creatures, and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail.
Joining them is Dr. Albert Finestone, Acting Director of the Institute on Aging at Temple University, who will bring his experience and wisdom to explore challenges of aging and to refute the common view of aging as a disease.
Holly Lange, Senior Vice President of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, whose programs reach 70,000 families each year, will discuss the care and services available to the elderly in Philadelphia.
