Risky Business:
Biotechnology and Agriculture

followed by
Not for Sale

Sunday, March 24, 6:30pm

Filmed in laboratories and fields, Risky Business presents scientists, industry proponents, environmental and consumer activists from the U.S., Europe, and developing countries who discuss the risks and benefits of biotechnology and its growing international impacts.

Not for Sale, a companion piece to Risky Business due out in January 2002, delves into the most recent Biotechnological advances including genetic patenting. Beyond food, genetic patenting claims ownership to life forms such as genes, seeds, and even human cell lines. This film illustrates “the connection between biodiversity and cultural diversity, between resistance to globalization and social & environmental justice.”

Renske van Staveren from the Philadelphia Fair Food Project will join us for a discussion following the films. Renske will speak from her national efforts to raise awareness about the potential consequences of genetic engineering in our food supply, and the relationship between the industrialization of agriculture & economic globalization.
