Meet at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center (640 Waterworks Drive) for muffins and coffee before boarding a school bus to the Belmont Water Treatment Plant. There, we will get a first hand look at the step-by-step process the Philadelphia Water Department goes through to turn Schuylkill River water into drinkable water for all of Philadelphia. Drew Brown, manager of Public Education Programs at PWD, will be our guide at Belmont and will also take us to an intake point on the Schuylkill River.
Well take the school bus back to the Water Works for a picnic lunch and a discussion on water issues with Matt Royer, Penn Futures staff attorney on watershed issues and Robin Mann (PDF File), who is active in water preservation including serving as chair of Sierra Clubs National Clean Water Campaign.
After lunch, Water Works director Gail Tomlinson will give us an overview of the center before we go off individually to explore the exhibits.
