Women in Islam: Diversity & Unity
Monday, April 22, 7:30pm
In the aftermath of September 11th, there have been many negative stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims, particularly with respect to the role of women. Three Muslim women from different parts of the world who are currently living in the US will join us. They will offer a brief overview of women in Quran and Hadith (sayings of the prophet Muhammed) and of the historical changes in the interpretation of Islamic teachings and law in relation to women. They will focus on experiences of integrating cultural and Islamic teachings in their own lives and share how these experiences affect their current lives in America. Tahija Vikalo, a staff member of the American Friends Service Committees Middle East Peace Program, is from Bosnia. She will be joined by Muslim women from other parts of the world.
