The Search for a Nonviolent Future

Monday, June 2, 6pm

with Michael N. Nagler

Michael N. Nagler, Professor of Classical Languages at the University of CA, Berkeley, and chairperson of the U.C. Peace and Conflict Studies Program. A widely published scholar in the fields of peace studies and spirituality, Nagler is the editor of “Metta: A Journal of Nonviolence,” and author of “Is There No Other Way? The Search for a Nonviolent Future,” which won the 2002 American Book Award. A student of Gandhi, Nagler contends that nonviolence has proven its power against arms and social injustice wherever it has been correctly understand and applied. The discussion will include Gandhi’s vision of a peace economy based on economies of scale or localness - svadeshi, and the relationship between economics and peace. Nagler argues that the shift to nonviolence begins within the individual, from which it can affect change in the larger community.
