Revealing: Transgendered People and the AIDS Epidemic
Wednesday, June 12th, 8 am
with Charlene Moore
Because of their minority and stigmatized status, transgendered persons face significant risks of HIV transmission, including a history of violence and abuse, poverty and unemployment, greater involvement in sex work and needle sharing for drugs, hormones and silicone injections. In addition, for transgendered persons with HIV, discrimination can lead to lack of access to needed health care. Education is required to improve medical providers and frontline service staffs cultural competence in the care of transgendered persons.
