We will visit 4 exceptional youth-run and school-run garden programs. During this tour experience the breadth of what is possible through youth centered gardening programs including, job training and business development, habitat restoration, nutrition education, service projects and curricular development.
The gardens we will visit:
Teens 4 Good urban farm, where youth get a taste of today's business world through hands-on entrepreneurial experiences that compliment lessons in health, business, and agriculture. University City High School Garden, which is run by student employees with the goal of increasing access to healthy food in West Philadelphia while serving as a job training site where students learn skills in horticulture, entrepreneurship, landscaping and greenhouse management. Longstreth Elementary School is the home of the Kinder-Garden Seed Company. CEO Chuck Lafferty and his kindergarten students organically grow, harvest and package our seeds for sale at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, as well as donating seeds, native and vegetable plants to their community for outreach, and produce to the city harvest programs from their 4,000 sq ft Campus park. And finally, the St Francis Xavier School Green City Program, a comprehensive plan to incorporate horticulture and environmental education into curriculum and student life of their pre-k through 8th grade elementary school. We will also learn about the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Green City Teachers Program, which is designed to provide
Philadelphia educators with the skills necessary to integrate horticultural and environmental education into curricula, after-school programs and service-learning projects, and to help students appreciate the role of nature in their lives.
