Dennis Winters, coordinator of the Philadelphia Million Solar Roofs Partnership, will take us first to Andy Rudin’s row house where his active 2.7KW photovoltaic system provides all the electricity for the house then sells excess to the grid. Ron Celentano, who installed the system, will give us an overview.
Next, we’ll visit Jurgen Balitzky’s home. He has a state-of-the-art evacuated tube solar hot water system handling his family’s hot water and heating needs. Through his business, Energy Alternatives, he also works with a wide variety of solar technology, some of which will be on display at this stop.
At our last destination, we’ll have a picnic lunch and discussion with Dennis on how to apply for grants to add a solar installation to your home or business. We will then tour Hap Haven’s 1895 Germantown carriage house which incorporates a number of innovative resource-saving systems including passive solar design and solar heated hot water pumped by solar electricity. Hap has been helping homeowners lower the environmental impact of their homes for almost 25 years - most recently through his new company, SunHaven Solar.
