When the NATO bombings of Kosovo began in April 1999, John Gallery and a group of other Quakers began a prayer vigil for peace on Independence Mall, which has continued each Sunday since.
For 25 years Bob Smith and the Brandywine Peace Community have conducted regular peace demonstrations and civil disobedience against militarization and weapons-producing corporations at Lockheed Martin in Valley Forge (formerly GE Aerospace).
Gallery and Smith will share their stories of unwavering commitment to act for peace. Founder of the citys Office of Housing and Community Development, Gallery served as its first director and currently consults to non-profits who seek neighborhood transformation through low-income affordable housing. Founder of the Brandywine Peace Community, a faith-based peace activist group committed to war resistance, Smith and others have been arrested and jailed for acts of nonviolent resistance many times over the past three decades.
