I Choose to Stay Here
Monday, July 18, 7:30pm
Hundreds of low income residents across the city are faced with forced removal from their homes and neighborhoods for redevelopment by the City through eminent domain laws and other procedures. Rosemary Cubas is executive director of Community Leadership Institute, which organizes low income people of color to stop the forced ‘takings’ of their homes. A founder of the Norris Square Civic Assoc., Cubas lives on an impacted block in North Phila. She will be joined by others, including 82-year-old Mary Sanders, whose occupied homes were targeted. Two short films, The Taking of Bodine: Never Forget and I Choose to Stay Here, will be shown.
Storytellings
Storytelling night provides the opportunity to hear the life stories of a variety of peoples and gives voice to underrepresented groups such as ex-offenders, senior citizens, gays, youth, immigrants and homeless people. They also provide a forum to exchange perspectives at a personal level on experiences such as war, civil rights marches, parenting issues, and illness.
Reservations highly recommended by calling 215-386-9224. Á la carte dinner 6pm (optional); Storytelling at 7:30. (Preferential seating given to those dining; remaining seats available to those with reservation for storytelling only.) Singles welcome at group tables.
