The Power of Community:
How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

Sunday, July 23, 7:00 pm

With the fall of the Soviet Union and the tightening of the US embargo, Cubans had to quickly adjust to a life with far less oil. This documentary shows how Cuba's success in restructuring their economy and lifestyle can be a model for the rest of us as we face the decline in the world's oil supply. The film visits urban gardens and organic farms, explains the relationship between food and fossil fuels, and shows how an economy can change from an industrialized, global focus to a local, community based one. It is a rare view into this island culture, using firsthand reporting that focuses on what Cuban's have learned and can share about adapting to living with less.

Activists Judy Wicks and Jerry Silberman will lead a discussion about peak oil, it’s implications for American lifestyle and community-based solutions to the pending crisis. Judy will also speak from her first hand experiences in Cuba. Jerry is organizing a conference "Fossil Free Philadelphia: Building a Just Society beyond Peak Oil & Global Warming," to be held Oct. 13/14 at the Arch St. Meeting House.
