The Future of Food

Sunday, July 24, 7pm

The Future Of Food offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade. Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, The Future of Food examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world’s food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

Deborah Koons Garcia, The Future Of Food's Director, Writer and Producer, will join us for a discussion following the showing. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Deborah Koons Garcia has called California home for over 30 years.  She fell in love with filmmaking when she first picked up a Bolex while student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  She went on to receive a master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her award winning films include the educational series All About Babies narrated by Jane Alexander, the feature film Poco Loco and Grateful Dawg,  the story of the musical friendship between her late husband Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, a film she instigated and for which she was chief creative consultant.  The Future of Food has been shown all over the world in festivals and gatherings of all sorts, and was the primary element is getting measure H passed last year in Mendocino County .  Measure H bans the growing of genetically engineered crops or animals in that county and was the first time citizens in the United States were able to vote on this important issue.  The Future of Food has been embraced by film buffs, farmers, food lovers and activists who recognize that a good film which educates and inspires brings people together in community and gives them the power to change the world.
