The Crisis in Public Education in Pennsylvania

Monday, October 1, 6pm

with David Hornbeck and Shelly Yanoff.

The State’s share of local educational expenditure has declined from 55% in the 1970s to 35% (2000-2001). There is a $50,000 gap between the wealthiest and poorest school district classrooms (of 25 kids). In Education Week’s (Jan., 2001) annual report on public education, Pennsylvania earned a D-, ranking among the 8 worst states in terms of equal opportunity for poor kids.

Hornbeck, former Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia and current Board Chair of the Children’s Defense Fund, is a founding member of Good Schools Pennsylvania, a coalition of organizations seeking to mobilize parents, students and concerned citizens to advocate for improved public education.

Yanoff is Executive Director of Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth, the region’s only full-time child advocacy organization. She will offer possible scenarios for public education in Philadelphia.
