Is water part of a shared “commons,” a human right for all people? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace? In the global context of over a billion people lacking access to safe drinking water “Thirst” provides a piercing look at the conflict between public stewardship and private profit.
David Harper, a consultant to nonprofit watershed organizations and land trusts, will provide an overview of positive, watershed-based efforts to plan for and protect sustainable water supplies in the Philadelphia region where a number of municipal water systems have been purchased by private water companies. Discussion will focus on local implications of global water issues and proactive planning in the Philadelphia area.
