9:30 Breakfast of coffee and scones at the Cafe
10:00 Tour by motorized trolley, where we will go to Eastern North Philadelphia, which has been a focus of the Citys community development efforts for over twenty-five years. This area of North Philadelphia, east of Broad Street and north of Spring Garden, is economically and culturally diverse, with neighborhoods ranging from the middle class African American community of Yorktown to the Latino Golden Mile at 5th and Lehigh. This tour will highlight successful development ventures, such as the Poplar Nehemiah townhouses, Ludlow Village, Borinquen Shopping Center, Taino Gardens and others. It will also look at the challenges of Eastern North Philly, where community development corporations are planning for future development in neighborhoods like Norris Square.
12:00 Lunch at the White Dog Cafe with Deborah McColloch, who has worked for the Office of Housing and Community Development since 1979. She will describe her experiences “in the trenches” of community development work.
$30 includes coffee and scones, lunch, tax, gratuity
