Patriot Act: Security and Freedom After 911

with David Kairys & Angel Ortiz

Monday, November 17, 6pm

David Kairys is the James E. Beasley Professor of Law at Temple Law School. He is a nationally recognized civil rights lawyer and edited one of the leading progressive critiques of law and the legal system, The Politics of Law (1998). Contending that the USA Patriot Act “endangers the essence of American democracy,” Councilman Ortiz was instrumental in the passage of City Council’s resolution against the legislation. The program will begin with a brief trailer for the independent film, Indivisible, produced by Resolution Pictures, which documents resistance to the USA Patriot Act through personal stories. Concluding the evening on a high note, one of the film’s producers, Renard Cohen, will present a song which he appropriately wrote to help gain support for the film - ‘Patriot Acts.’

4:30 optional guided tour of the USA Patriot Art traveling exhibit of non-mainstream cartoons, including the work of local cartoonists Signe Wilkinson and John Jonik, which draws attention to recent attacks on civil rights and to US actions abroad Main lobby, Central Library, 1901 Vine St., Philadelphia
