Professor Emeritus of Finance at the Wharton School, U of Penn, Herman is a long-time analyst of economic issues, foreign policy, and the media, and regular columnist for "Z Magazine." Herman contends that the corporate media's contribution to the 'public sphere,' where issues important to a democratic society are addressed and debated, is steadily shrinking; the independent movement offers a real option that puts public interest at the top of the agenda.
Herman will be joined by representatives of several local initiatives, including the Independent Media Center (IMC), which is building an infrastructure for non-corporate, volunteer-based local reporting; the Media Tank, which focuses on public policy, media literacy and activism; the Community Access Coalition, which seeks public access to cable-TV channels (Philly is the largest US city without one); and West Philly's Prometheus Radio Project, which helps rural community groups start low-power FM radio stations.
