Amsterdam Night
“An International Perspective on Drug Policy“
Monday, November 26, 6:00pm
As part of our international sister restaurant project, a delegation of White Dog patrons spent a week in Amsterdam studying Dutch drug policy - a system which has decriminalized drug use and treats abuse as a health problem rather than a criminal act. Coffeehouses such as Cafe Paradox, the White Dogs Dutch “Sister” Restaurant, legally serve marijuana and hash which are regulated similar to the way the US regulates alcohol.
Some of the group, including a member of the Drug Reform Coordination Network, a sociologist and fellow with the Lindesmith Center in New York, a counselors assistant at a drug rehabilitation center, and White Dog owner Judy Wicks, will report back on their experiences in Holland & their interest in stopping the expensive, inhumane and failed U.S. War on Drugs.
An after dinner discussion will feature Kevin Zeese, President of Common Sense for Drug Policy, who will discuss how many countries around the world have either put in place some form of decriminalization of personal possession of drugs, are treating drugs as a health problem, or are moving in that direction. He will also address how the U.S. not only continues to treat drug use as a criminal offense, but has threatened to withhold money from other nations if they go ahead with decriminalization.
$30 includes three course dinner, tax, gratuity, speaker & discussion. Reservations with advance payment required by giving a credit card number over the phone or sending a check. Senior citizens (over 65) and full time students: $25 with advance notification. Student stand-by: Call between 4 - 5:30pm the day of the event for $15 dinner at 6pm or free discussion at 7:30. Single reservations are welcome where youll be seated at a group table. Vegetarian dishes are always offered.
