White Dog’s Stand on
Genetically Modified Organisms

The White Dog opposes the introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into the food chain. Chef/partner Kevin von Klause and his staff have begun the process of eliminating GMO ingredients from our menu. Through the Chefs Collaborative, the cafe has joined with restaurants across the county and organized local chefs to speak out against GMOs. Judy Wicks sits on the national board of Chefs Collaborative and Kevin is co-chair of the Philadelphia Chapter (with Christina Pirello).

We oppose the use of GMOs because the long term effects of changing the genetic make-up of living organisms - plants, animals, humans, and microorganisms - and combining the genes of unrelated species has not been tested and there are many environmental, health, socioeconomic and ethical hazards involved. There is no mandated labeling of GMO ingredients, and so we unknowingly ingest genetically altered foods which are now present in most processed foods.

According to the Organic Consumers Association, over 60 million acres of genetically engineered crops are presently under cultivation in the US, and 500,000 diary cows are being injected regularly by Bovine Growth hormones. It has already been discovered that genetically engineered (GE) corn is poisonous to Monarch butterflies and there is growing evidence that GE crops are adversely affecting other beneficial insects such as ladybugs and bees, and are polluting nearby organic crops. Genetically engineered crops that are herbicide resistant are producing “superweeds” and “superpests” and GE crops, fish, and animals threaten to overpower and destroy natural species.
