Green Team
White Dog employees seeking to learn, teach and work towards the Cafes environmental mission organized to form the Green Team in 1998. They focus on ways of controlling things such as pollution, recycling, waste control, farming and organics.
In the past year, the Green Team has:
- Conducted a self-eco-audit of all supplies, equipment, and practices in the Cafe
- Used the results to source new suppliers, upgrade equipment and change White Dog practices to be more environmentally
friendly
- Helped
West Philadelphias Lea Elementary School turn a paved lot into an organic garden
- Spearheaded a recycling rejuvenation campaign with neighborhood businesses
- Planted trees with West Philadelphia High School Students
- Researched electrical suppliers to find the most environmentally friendly source of power.
- Taken educational trips to Local Farms including
Branch Creek Farm, Greens Grow Farm, Phillaberry Farm
Green Meadow and Greystone Farm
- Visited local businesses including Metropolitan Bakery, New Harmony Coffee and Urban Roots Project
- Worked with students from local schools on Chefs Collaborative Adopt a School Program, career days, mentoring program, and volunteering for local projects.
The green team continues to work with the University City High School Hydroponics Garden Project and
Drew Elementary Garden Project. They meet through out the year to brainstorm new ideas, pool resources on ongoing projects and follow-up on completed initiatives.
