In 1994 we became interested in the plight of the indigenous people of Mexico in their struggle for economic, social and political justice. In 1995, we established a sister relationship with Casa del Pan, a vegetarian restaurant which serves food from their own organic gardens, and is active in supporting a school for handicapped children and preserving the nearby Lacondon rainforest. Our 1996 trip, led by Global Exchange, explored the causes of the civil unrest, the progress of the peace talks, environmental and economic issues and the continuing low intensity warfare by the Mexican army and police against the indigenous people.
