We visited Nicaragua and established a sister relationship with Selva Negra in 1987. Our purpose in choosing Nicaragua was to learn first hand how U.S. foreign policy in funding the Contras and imposing an embargo effected the lives of the Nicaraguan people, and then to make U.S. citizens aware of this. We sponsored two tours to Nicaragua in conjunction with the Central American Organizing Project in 1988 and 1989. The second tour was a family trip in which 10 adults and 10 young people participated, with the purpose of teaching young people the importance of being informed about issues in the world community as responsible citizens of the United States. Selva Negra is a family owned business which also operates a small coffee plantation.
